Have been away from this page for quite a while. Hello to Rick Neff. Very sorry & just heard about Brother Jensen. That man was an inspiration. PMA has always kept life very real for me cuz it was a great reality having been there. I wish all my PMA brothers a happy and safe holiday season in this very turmoiled world.

Have been away from the website for some time now and was very saddened to hear of the passing of Brother Jensen. He was the Dean of Discipline during my time at Power and was an intimidating figure to say the lest. Under all that exterior was a true mentor and very compassionate human being. He will be sorely missed

I would like to congratulate the PMAAA Board for a wonderful and memorable evening Saturday, Nov.5 at the 80th Anniversary Reunion. What a smash hit it was with the installation of the first members of the Power Hall of Fame. Kudos all around.

Also, I would like to thank Chick Pisani and Mike Kelly in particular for their tireless and unflagging dedication that made this Reunion the great success that it was. These two gentlemen were at it for hours before and all through the celebration with no time out to enjoy the event themselves. They deserve praise and thanks from all of us.

Just found this website. Kudo's to all those who helped make it possible. Saw Brother Jensen in 2006 at a high school baseball game in New Jersey. We talked for over 2 hours about Power and never did watch the game we both came to see. Heard about his passing, he was a good man. Will now try to contact some classmates, some of whom I saw in 99 at our 30th reunion.

MEMORIAL DAY

To a five foot six, 120-pound freshman sprinter, the captain of the varsity track team, a senior, struck a daunting figure. Pat Gallagher stood close to six feet tall. He had a blonde crew cut that appeared as square as his jaw. I do not remember him talking much, or smiling, ever. He seemed always to have something important on his mind. If you distracted him from whatever that was, his gaze alone could shove you away. That winter, Power Memorial Academy elected its first Student Council, with Pat chosen as its President. “Of course”, I recall thinking, “who else could it be”? I admired him. Soon, the spring of 1962 arrived, Pat Gallagher graduated, and he went off to Providence College. I never saw him again.

Four years later, I was a freshman once more, now in college. Here, at West Point, there were many seniors with crew cuts, square jaws, and iron gazes. They all reminded me of Pat Gallagher, and I admired them alike. Another spring came ‘round, 1966, with graduation and commissions as lieutenants in the United States Army. They all went off also, but this time to war. I never saw many of them again either. Some did return, before long, but as casualties to be buried.

Years later, I learned that Pat Gallagher was more like them than I knew. Lieutenant Patrick J. Gallagher, United States Marine Corps, had died in Viet Nam on September 27, 1967.

It used to be called “Decoration Day”. That’s where all the flowers went, every last Monday in May, decorating the graves of the fallen ones, those who Mr. Lincoln said “gave the last full measure of devotion”. Over the years it became “Memorial Day”, and I like that better. I cannot do flowers for them all, but I can have a memory of them all.

All of us know, or know of, a soldier, sailor, marine, or airman, lost in youth keeping America safe, and free. This Memorial Day, amidst the parades, the flags, the hot dogs and beer, all those genuine American things that celebrate what they secured for us, take a moment for a memory too.

Webmaster: The problem that I see is that the reunions and the St. Pat's march are becoming .shall I say.boring. Same faces; essentially the same thing. Last Saturday the Del-Satins (famous Doo-Wop group) played
at my elementary school with 350 attending and they raised good money for the church and school. Be bold with the dance and you'll get a ton of money for the scholarship fund and it would surely be interesting.just a thought.

Annie, I was on the Power track team from 1960-1964. Your father was my coach. Every freshman was required to go the 72nd St. track. Your father was looking for talent. I placed third in the 100 yd dash. However, I would end up being a distance runner. So, I was on the track team whether I wanted to be or not. Believe me it was a great experience. Your dad was a great coach.
My talent and his coaching earned me a track scholarship to college. During my years Power had one of the best track teams in NYC. We were always battling with Archbishop Molloy for the number one spot. During my years Power won numerous Xcountry, Indoor and Outdoor championships thanks to your dad's coaching. In my freshman year both the varsity and freshman Xcountry teams won the Irish Christian Brothers 1st place team trophy. However, if I had to pick one event that made your father most proud during my years it would be April 11, 1964. On this date at the Catholic High School Relay Carnival at Cardinal Spellman I was a member of the Distance Medley Relay Team that took the gold medal. The time we ran was the fastest in the United States. Oh, by the way Power won a total of 35 medals that day. A sure testament to your fathers coaching.

Several years ago I brought up the subject of having a Power Dance again and the idea was turned down by the board members while some alumni were for it. I suggest you read today's NY Times.front page. "A 2nd Shot to Have the Best Night of Their Lives". The article is about proms for adults but it might as well pertain to a high school dance.

To my Brother Alumni,
It is with deep sadness to inform you that Jane Kelly, wife of Mike Kelly, PMAAA Vice President, has passed away.

Jane was one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met and a saint among saints to put up with some of Mike's antics with the Power golf towels.

Jane always participated at all of our events and will be terribly missed.

Please keep Jane and Mike, and the rest of the Kelly family in your prayers.

It is the saddest of duties to report the passing of a 1965 Alumni, John White in Kisimmee, Fla. Accoring to his wife Kay, he fell into a coma after a sudden illness, given the Last Rites, and left us on April 1, 2011. During my years at PMA he was my best friend. We all had one guy we could count on and he was mine. I'm sure he will be missed by the Class of "65", but none no more than I. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for 4/16 according to his wife. If I receive more details I will post them. God bless John, rest in peace.

All:
Yesterday, Sunday, 13 March, you may have read about a police officer who was killed in Brooklyn after being pushed over a railing, falling and breaking his neck. His name was Alain Schaberger, a NYPD police officer and Navy veteran.

Alain is the son of Power Memorial graduate Paul Schaberger (1965) and many from the class of 1964 might remember him as well.

Alain is survived by his father Paul, his mother May, and his sister Tracey. Arrangements are still being made, but it is expected that a wake will be on Thursday and the Funeral on Friday.

Prayers are asked for the family as well as for the repose of his soul. He was a ten year veteran of NYPD and a three year Navy veteran.

We had a great day for our Remembrance Mass yesterday. Bright sun, no wind, temperatures in the mid fifties. Even better weather is forecast for St, Patrick's Day with bright sun and temperatures in the upper fifties.

Great weather for a parade.

We have had an increase in responses from the '70's and early '80's but the classes of '60, '61, and '64 are still way ahead of all the other alumni groups.

This year the parade is a little shorter and will end at around 77th Street.

We are shooting for a fifth straight trophy as one of the best and most respected marching groups. So join your alumni in the grand march up Fifth Avenue with Power Nobility and Pride.

If you plan on marching you must register with Kevin Bollbach at kevin_tax@yahoo.com

250th St. Patrick's Day Parade.

A very historical parade this year.

How about some more participation from the '70s and '80s?

Only alumni are permitted to march and our usual strict dress code will apply. Please register now.

It is with a rather heavy heart that I am writing to you now. I needed inform you about the passing of a good friend and fellow Power alum Denis Fitzgerald PMA Class of 1980. St. Patrick's Day, March 17, falls on a Thursday this year. Power Memorial Academy Alumni are invited to march once again in the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade as we have done for the last 8 years to honor our school and the Irish Christian Brothers that provided us with a great catholic education.

Only alumni are permitted to march and our usual strict dress code will apply. Please register now.
