Dear Fellow Alumni,

James -- Sorry to take so long to answer you. The following is an excerpt from a speech given by Regis Philbin to the New York State Broadcasters Association on June 25, 2003. The only thing wrong with his statement is the part that states: "which was torn down and became Power Memorial". Of course, the building was used as it stood, after some cleanup and repair by the good Brothers. -- Vic '52 Anyone interested in reading the complete article can e-mail me and I will send them the site. My e-mail is in the Alumni Info section, under class of 1952 "This New Yorker of the Year Award really means a lot to me. I love New York. I was born in the city, at 62nd and Amsterdam Avenue. There was a hospital named Children’s Hospital which was torn down and became Power Memorial, the famous high school, which produced Lew Alindor, also known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Now, of course, it’s become just another condominium high-rise on the West Side!"

Thomas "TC" Murray, PMA '52, went home to God on Friday, June 20, 2008. In compliance with his request, his fellow St. Paul the Apostle student and altar boy, Frank Feeley, PMA '57, played the bagpipes as TC was placed in the hearse for his final ride. The Celebration of the Liturgy of Christian Burial was officiated by four priests, two of them former students of TC at Essex Catholic. The Cantor for the Mass was Joseph DeFazio, PMA '71. PMA Alumni president, Andrew "Chick" Pisani, '70, placed his PMA Board of Directors Power pin on TC's lapel before the casket was closed. The PMA contingent at the wake and funeral were Chick Pisani, Ed O'Keefe, '61, Fran Feeley, Joe DeFazio, Tom McGuire, '49, Deacon John Kelly, '52, and Terry McAdams, '52. The wake and funeral were attended by many of TC's former students at Essex Catholic and Mater Dei, parishioners from St. Anselm's parish in Wayside, NJ, as well as a number of Tom's historical and newspaper colleagues from the Great State of New Jersey. Two wonderful and thoughtful former Mater Dei students, Diana and Kenneth Kringdon who have been TC's guardian angels over the past few years, arranged the wake and Mass. Requiescat in Pace Thomas C. Murray.

6/15/08 To all of my Brother Alumni, It is with deep regret and sorrow that I have to notify you of the passing of one of our founding board members, Thomas “TC” Murray ’52. Tom was at the very first meeting at 161 W61st Street when we organized the steering committee for the PMAAA and served proudly on the board and several committees. He was the original Committee Chairman of the Mass of Remembrance. In fact, the Mass was his idea. He developed it and nurtured it until he turned the reigns over to Joe DeFazio ’71. He saw the fruits of his labor with the Mass expanding every year. Not only was Tom a Power Alumnus, he was a teacher at Power. Tom was a character in his own right, and a true Catholic gentleman. May God Bless Tom and keep him. We will miss him. Please keep Tom in your prayers. Chick Pisani ‘70 President, PMAAA

Sad news for the PMA Alumni, friends and colleagues of THOMAS “T.C.” MURRAY, PMA '52: Tom passed away suddenly, on June 14, 2008. It was the result of an accidental fall down the stairs at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Anslem’s on Friday, June 20 at 11 a.m. Email notices will be sent about memorial services later this summer in New York and New Jersey to be arranged by friends. In lieu of flowers, Tom asked that donations be made in his name to The Center in Asbury Park, c/o Fr. Bob Kaeding, P.O. Box 832, Asbury Park, NJ 07712. Directions to St. Anselm’s Garden State Parkway to Exit 105 (Eatontown) onto Rt. 36 East. First right onto HOPE ROAD to end (Shafto Road). Right onto Shafto Road. The messages below were sent to Mike Kelly('55) Parade Chaiman, from Phil & Charlie Brady the brothers of Tom Brady Dear Mike: Your welcome call last Monday came as an enormous surprise. I applaud you for your persistence in locating me after so many years. I spoke with my brother Charles, who, like me was honored and deeply moved in learning that the PMA Association planned to commemorate the 60th Anniversary our brother Tom's death. We are sincerely grateful to you and your PMA colleagues for undertaking this generous and remarkable tribute. As you thoughtfully mentioned in our conversation, these events do conjure up extraordinarily sad recollections. Charles and I have discussed, at length, the possibility of participating in one or more of these commemorative activities but feel that it would be too emotionally painful. We are mindful that many other families have endured great sadness and grief and that they might respond differently to such an honor. My brother and I are overwhelmed with PMA's kindness and consideration. We shall watch the Parade and experience both a moment of sadness and heartfelt pride when the PMA Alumni Association marches up 5th Avenue. Thank you. Sincerely, Phil Brady Mike: Your personal efforts in honoring our beloved brother are appreciated more than you know.Your extra touch in visitig the family gravesite will always be .remembered. Sixty years later,Tommy remains a core part of our lives & our presence on March 17 would have rekindled the memories of that horrific day and its aftermath even though Phil & I were so young on 3/15/48. There appears to be a special comraderie among the PMA members& I am sure it was in no small part due to Tommy's untimely death. Our Mom & Dad would be so grateful to the PMA in the way their son was remembered.especially the Mass after all these years. The floral piece at the gravesite was beautiful.Phil & I are most grateful to all. Sincerely,.Charlie Brady

Vincent J. 'Vinny' Duffy, PMA '55, passed away Sunday April 27th, at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan after a long fight with serious medical problems. Those of us who were with him over the last twelve months were inpressed by that same spirit and toughness that he demonstrated many years ago when he competed in 3 on 3 basketball on the Rockaway McGuire Park courts near Fitzgerald's 108th Street pub, and the drive for winning that he displayed at Power Memorial and Seton Hall. Vinny came from the Inwood section of upper Manhattan, moved to the Rockaways as a teenager, attended Power Memorial and Seton Hall, married and raised seven children, had a successful career in New York and Los Angeles with Decca Records, and recently moved back to Belle Harbor on the Rockaway Peninsula where his brother, John, and his 101 year old father still reside. He will be waked today (Tuesday) at O'Connor's Funeral home at 91-05 Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Beach from 2:00 to 5:00PM , and 7:00 to 10:00PM. Several classmates have said they will be at the Funeral Home on Wednesday at 9:30AM to pay their respects, and then attend the 11:00AM Mass at St. Camillus at Rockaway Beach Boulevard and 99th Street. The family would like us to visit from 9:30 to10:00AM, and then leave so the family may say their final prayers. After the Mass, several friends have said they would like to congregate for coffee, tea and even something stronger.if you are interested in getting with us on Wednesday morning at the Mass, please advise. Where we have class captains we have participation, where we don't participation is minimal. Case in point , the last St. Patrick's Parade. Starting as of 1950. We had ZERO participation from the classes of '50 '51 '66 '77 '78 '79 '80 '82 '83 '85 We had no class captain for '50 '66 '80 '82 '83. We could also use captains for '45, '48 '58 '68,'80 where others are doing two classes. You will really enjoy the contacts, sharing memories and stories. Please contact me if you can help. I will send you a list of registered Alumni for that class with phone numbers and emails where available.

The Remembrance Mass was a very memorable experience. With 8 former PMA Alumni as con-celebrants led by our own Bishop Walsh, PMA '59, it was quite a sight to behold. The memorial on the 60th Anniversary of Tom Brady's death added to the special meaning of the event. The reception that followed gave us a chance to renew old acquaintances and speak with families of our deceased alumni and teachers.
Our Annual Alumni Dinner will be held on October 25th. More details to follow.
