Dear Power-Men, and Friends of Power, It has been a momentous year for us Power Alumni. While celebrating they joy of the 75th Anniversary of the founding of our Alma Mater, we experienced the deep loss of several alumni, two of who were so instrumental in the Power Memorial Academy Alumni Association, Rich Coppelino and Dion McKenna. As we enter the holiday season and reflect on the year we are about to complete, let us pray that 2007 will be a year of health and happiness for all our Alumni, Friends & Families. This year, our first Power Memorial Scholars entered All Hallows and Rice High Schools, and our scholars, Jonathan Cesar and Jude Chery have distinguished themselves at their respective schools, and continue to bring credit to the name of Power! The goal of the Power Memorial Academy Alumni Association Scholarship Program, is to build a self-sustaining annuity, so that we will always have a Power Memorial Scholar at each institution, and to date we are only about 40% toward that financial goal. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation, and join your fellow alumni in insuring that the name of Power Memorial will continue in perpetuity, please read about the program below, and use the donation instructions. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, The PMAAA Scholarship Fund Committee. The need-based scholarships will be offered for All Hallows and Rice High Schools, to Catholic students who are scholastically accomplished and are U.S. citizens. Selection and continued participation of recipients will be the responsibility of the school Administrators. Alumni, Friends & Family, or anyone wishing to make a tax-deductible contribution to Scholarship Program, may send a check made out to the Power Memorial Alumni Assn., indicating “SCHOLARSHIP FUND” on the memo line in the bottom left-hand corner, and enclose the following form. If you wish to make a donation in the name of a PMA alumnus, parent(s) of alumnus or former faculty member, please enter his name and year of graduation or service. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's latest book, "On The Shoulders Of Giants" will be available on January 30th. The story is about "The Harlem Renaissance" and interweaves the story of the Jazz greats who played in Harlem in the 1930's, and the Harlem "Rens" basketball team who played at the same venue, and who also had an innovative and up-tempo style that also captivated fans. It's also Kareem's personal journey, uniting the development of the up-tempo style of the game he loves, with the development of the innovative style of jazz, the appreciation for which, he received from his jazz-playing Father.

Today’s service for Rich Coppolino , held in St. Francis Prep’s auditorium, was very moving and special. Over 200 people attended along with much of the St. Francis student body. Love and respect for the man was clearly evident throughout the service. One priest whom was his friend for 11 years recounted a visit with Rich in the hospice last Friday. Ever witty, Rich said something to the effect of “if you are here to see me then I must be in really bad shape”. They discussed the impending eulogy and Rich asked that it not be “morbid” in nature. His wish was fulfilled as the priest’s recollections were truly indicative of the wit of the man we have all known in so many different ways.
Other eulogies were given, all very touching and emotional. Tears were flowing throughout, especially with the student body whose lives were clearly touched by Rich. The students put on an excellent service with beautiful renditions of songs and prayers along with the concelebrating priests one whom was a childhood friend of Rich’s from Brooklyn.
Rich’s legacy are the countless number of lives he had touched so positively during his 64 years of life. His special love of his 20 years at Power Memorial and the many friends and relationships developed were cited multiple times during the ceremony. Those whom knew him best attested to that special love for Power. That love carried over to St. Francis Prep where he performed in the same capacity as guidance counselor helping hundreds and thousands of students enroll in college often through his own drive and perseverance as he did at Power.
At the very end, Rich’s brother Mike noted as others had before him that Rich had never married, never had his own children or family.. However, Rich was “rich” in a very unique manner citing his extended family of 42 years of Power and St. Francis Prep students and many other people whose live he had touched along the way.
I believe many of us in attendance came to realize that Rich was even more extraordinary than we had ever known before. We are all his legacy, whether Power or St. Francis alumni, as we are to the institutions we hold so dear. We are a testament to a man whom wanted only the best for all of us and devoted his entire life to ensuring we got the opportunity to be the best we could be.
Farewell Rich Coppolino, a very special, always decent and good man. May you rest easy in heaven and be happy with all of the family members your boyhood priest friend cited today. Future Power reunions will never be the same without you but your spirit will live on. That spirit is synonymous with the renewed spirit of pride in our Power heritage that has resurfaced from all walks of life thanks to your efforts and that of your colleagues. As visual evidence of your legacy, we will always march up Fifth Avenue remembering you as the very special man you were.
Wishing the very best possible to all of my Power brethren, I am
Sincerely, Glenn Fernandez Class of ‘69
P.S. My own son attends Bergen Catholic High School where Brothers Murphy, Jensen and Sheridan all teach. He is learning how such a lifelong special bond can be formed.

Sorry to hear of Rich's passing. I attending one of Fernando's reunions and it was great to catch up with Rich on the many years that had passed. When they razed the physical structure of PMA, little did they know that a piece of the foundation remained. Rich's efforts to keep the Power tradition alive will remain with us forever. We as alumni owe a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid to Rich and owe it to him to keep the Power tradition alive. May he rest in peace knowing we will carry on his mission.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Rich Coppolino. A few years ago I organized a PMA school reunion in South Florida and he was the guest speaker. We all had a wonderful time and I am grateful that he gave me a T-shirt, a nice polo shirt and a cap, all with our school name. I proudly wear them around Miami and many times folks have stopped me to ask about Power. May Rich rest in peace.

"Oh Brother!" opened on Friday night at the Paulist Center. The play was formerly dedicated to the memory of Brother Francis I. Offer and Thomas P. Kostka, a Brother for 30 years. Tom Kostka's wife and daughter were there for the dedication. Power was well represented at the event with Terry McAdams, '52; George Smyth, '64, a Board member; and the class of '61 led the way with PMAAA VP, Ed O'Keefe, as well as John Dwyer, John Early, Marshall Hunter and Jerry McGee. I want to personally thank John Begley '70 for coming up with the idea of us taking a tablecloth from the 75th Anniversary Reunion and having everyone at the reunion sign it with heartfelt wishes to Mr Coppolino.
I brought the tablecloth to Rich Coppolino a few days after the dinner. He was very moved to see all of your messages & signatures on the tablecloth.
It was a perfect gift for him. Even the nurses commented about what a wonderful gesture it was. John, thanks again, for coming up with the idea.

Dion McKenna's family sent the following email to Terry McAdams yesterday. I felt it should be shared with all of the alumni. Terry: Just wanted to say a big "THANK YOU" to you and all of the Alumni Association for making my family feel so welcome and wanted at the Jubilee Celebration. It went wonderfully and it seemed that everyone there had a great time. We were touched to receive the plaque honoring my Dad for his dedication to the Alumni Association. He was truly committed to the association and showed that through the work he did on behalf of it. He was proud each year to march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade (sore feet and all) and could barely breathe a sigh of relief afterwards before beginning work on the next year's parade. Going to the celebration was definitely one of those bittersweet times in life for me. Meeting many of my Dad’s fellow alumni and seeing what he meant to everyone in the association was truly emotional and just added to what I already knew; that he was a great man. His lightheartedness made him easy to get along with and his sense of humor made people enjoy being around him. We all miss him dearly. Once again, let me say that we are so thankful that he was part of the great Power Memorial Academy Alumni Association and for the pride and satisfaction that it brought to his life. You are all now a special part of his family’s life too. With Love and Gratitude, Eileen Michels (McKenna)
Chuck Cummingham's sister, Peggy, sent the following email today.
Hello Terry, I wanted to say thanks again for the gala on Saturday.the whole thing was great and I appreciate all the hard work that the members did. The spirit of the alumni is great. If possible pass my thanks along to whomever you can. Sincerely, Peggy…

Getting ready to attend these evenings reunion and it reminded me that recently, my wife and I attended one of her long time friend's birthday in Manhattan. Eileen had her sister there and my wife had recently attended her high school reunion and was talking about it. We all joined in about high school. When Eileen's sister heard I went to Power, she (out of ear shot from her husband), told me she went to the 65 Power Prom (held in a decorated gym) with Joe Orefice. In addition, a long time friend of mine called me from Jim Reed's office, where he is Nassau County Commissioner of Consumer Affairs. We are hooking up on 10-31-06. He will be one of my speakers in a Bank Compliance Seminar on privacy. It will be held at the New York City College of Technology. I have also worked, several times, with Roy Jensen on various banking committees and consulting assignments. Small world. Good luck to all. Norm

To my Power family,
Rich Coppolino has been an integral part of PMA and my continuing in education.
I started teaching at Power in 1970, Rich helped me form into the teacher/coach I am now 37 years later.
From Power to Xaverian to St. John Neumann in Florida (another Christian Bros. high school), we stayed in touch.
He was at Sloan when I was suffering from cancer and we spoke how we were fighting together again.
Starting today, his name will be in the intentions of the students of this high school.
Thanks for the notice.

Mike Dowling, Class of 1964

Just saw a news crawl announcing the death, from leukemia, of the actor Bruno Kirby, age 57. Mr.Kirby was a PMA student, from Hell's Kitchen, under his birth name Bruce Quidaciolu. I believe he was Class of 1967, or possibly 1968. He is probably best known for his work in the films "City Slickers", "When Harry met Sally, and "The Godfather, Part II". My personal favorite role, however was as Marlon Brandos' nephew in "The Freshman". Condolences to his family on their loss.
