It's nice to see that the Power Spirit is still alive. I am a member of the class of '65. I feel that my years at PMA were some of my best. I wonder if anyone remembers Br. Killelea. He was the principal during my 4 years at PMA. Does anyone remember Br. Mclaughlin?
Good luck to all

To Chick Pisani: I lost my class ring many years ago. Do you know any means to replace it ?
13 July 2004

Kevin, I can only guess at this. But I would start with Rice or All Hallows and find out what company makes their rings. Chances are the Christian Brothers might use the same vendor who supplied Power's rings, if they are still in business. Chick |

I had the urge..was in Manhattan at 28th and Broadway about 5:30 PM..had to satisy the urge..yes, walked up to Mr. Softee and ordered a chocolate ice cream soda. Turning around while awaiting my fulfillment, I noticed a middle aged black man wearing a basketball shirt..hey, just a sec..on the front is "POWER" and below is the number 33. "Excuse me, did you attend Power Memorial high school" I ask and we talked for a while. I noticed on the back of it "Alcindor" and below #33.
Well wadaya know! Still feel energized after seeing this!

On Monday, June 28, the Vatican announced the appointment of Msgr. GERALD WALSH, graduate of the class of '59, as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York. Msgr. Walsh is currently pastor of St. Elizabeth's Church in Washington Heights and Vicar for Northern Manhattan. He will be installed to his new position in September in ceremonies at St. Patrick's Cathderal. Monsignor was invited to be the principal celebrant at the PMAAA first Mass of Remembrance at St. Paul's on March 13 but due to illness, he had to cancel. He will be invited to be our principal celebrant at the second annual Mass of Remembramnce on Saturday, March 12, 2005 at St. Paul's to which all Powermen and their families are invited.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar' 65 recently did a wonderful interview with Michael Kay on the YES Network's "CenterStage" (Time Warner Ch. 143). It was a outstanding program, and alumni who would like to see the re-broadcast can tune-in or set their DVRs, TIVOs, etc. to one of the following 90 minute time slots: June 11 starting at 11:30 am; June 15th starting at 6:30 am; June 16th starting at 6:30 pm; or June 20th starting at 4 pm.

It is appropriate that on the 60th anniversary of D-Day, our own Kareem Abdul Jabbar has assumed the role of a war historian. In his recently released book, "Brothers in Arms: The Epic Story of the 761st Tank Battalion: World War II's Forgotten Heroes," Kareem tells of the racism that existed in the pre-Truman segregated armed services, as well as the bravery of this unique group of soldiers who served under General Patton during the final days of World War II in Europe. In a recent interview on Public Radio, Kareem discussed the many obstacles he had to overcome as a historian, including documentation of "lost" records. It's good to see our basketball superstar using his talent and energy in the field of history. Go Kareem!

Dear Brothers, Friends, and former students of Tony Grasso.
It is my great pleasure to report that Coach Grasso is "cancer-free" after many difficult weeks of chemo...He was stoic and brave during it all... As usual, his students came first...through the pain, through the anguish, through it all. He is now going through more treatments of "ice-chemo" and then a bone marrow transplant. He is such a strong character and a beautiful man...Please pray that he remains strong...we need him, the kids need him, and obviously he has friends everywhere. I will pass your sentiments on to him...He could use the cheering up as he has quite a long haul ahead of him this summer. I would love to respond to anyone individually. Please feel free to email me at any time.

Terry, I'm as proud as can be of such an honor and I am proud to be associated with such a fine group of men as is the PMA Alumni Association. Terry, thanks to your generosity, dedication and stern leadership on the Parade Committee, you have achieved an outstanding, remarkable and much-admired result. But, let us not forget where this all started. With your aggressive leadership, you have lead us to the formation of a steering committee, incorporation of the association, an executive committee who have inherited your zeal and dedication...and finally we cannot forget the wonderful PMA Alumni who have now performed in two St. Patrick's Day Parades with class and pride. We can really show our pride now! Congratulations to all…and to all alumni…"Take the day off!"

My fellow alumni, you can take tomorrow off! At the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee meeting on May 4 the Power Memorial Academy Alumni Association was presented with a trophy for our outstanding contribution to the success of the 2004 St. Patrick's Day Parade.

I am writing this with tears in my eyes. I completely forgot my Dad went to Power Memorial. I can't believe I never went to this web site before. I am the son of Jose Alfonso, class of 1965. My father passed away in 1999 due to heart problems. I want so desperately to know how my father was as a child, as a friend and as a student. My Dad was a great man as a father and as a soldier. He spent 20 years in the Army and served during Vietnam and was recalled during the Persian Gulf War. He spent the majority of his life in San Antonio, Texas and is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
If anyone has stories or photos of my father, I would be forever grateful. You can reach me at eric_alfonso@yahoo.com.
Sincerely, Eric Alfonso Lancaster, CA

Having completed my duties (Mass and PR) with our Board of Directors, I left for Florida on March 18 for a brief holiday. The final day of the six day trip was spent with Fernando Hernandez, '71, and a resident of Miami. He sported his PMA shirt as he gave me a V.I.P. tour of South Beach (SOBE)and then drove me to the airport for my flight back to Newark. It was exhilarating for me to hear of his enthusiasm for our alma mater. He told me of his efforts to organize Powermen in Florida and the successful reunion he had last year. Who knows, the Association may be interested in sponsoring a long weekend mid-winter trip to SOBE next year?
You're doing a great job, Fernando. Congratulations!

As Chair of the Remembrance Committee,I was very happy to see a crowd of nearly 200 alums, wives, widows, and friends of Power at our first annual Mass of Remembrance on March 13 at St Paul's. May I thank all those who attended this beautiful liturgy. I was proud to see my classmates, Msgr. Jack Gibbons and Deacon John Kelly as concelebrants on the altar. So, too, I was delighted to see one of my former PMA student's, Stefan Chevalier and his family, as well as Congressman Joe Crowley. Joe was a member of my "Op Search" Committee back in '79-'80. Once again, thank you for attending our first collective liturgy.
We will hold our annual Mass on the Saturday before the big parade. Next year the date will be March 12 so please put it on your calendar.

To All My Brother Board Members & Fellow Alumni
I once received an e-mail from the daughter of a deceased alumnus that closed with the comment: “I wish Power were still open. It would be a privilege to send my grandson to a school that produced men like my father and you.” Well, while the physical Power may no longer exist it is clear that the spiritual Power is still standing.
On Saturday morning March 13th, in the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, the values of faith, empathy and allegiance, instilled in us by the dedicated Irish Christian Brothers and Faculty were clearly on display. As I sat in the congregation that morning, I thought, what a remarkable occasion this is.
Deceased alumni, who a year ago were remembered only by their relatives and friends, were being recalled as men of Power. Through a beautiful liturgy of prayer and music, fellow alumni, joined by the shared experience of a Power education, prayed for their eternal rest.
The dedication and sincerity of that event surely was evidence to the wives, children and other relatives of the deceased that their loved ones would not be forgotten by the Power community. It certainly demonstrated why affectionate memories of Power remained with these loved ones for so many years.
I also thought what a great gift I had been given…… to be part of the PMAAA, the organization that arranged such a heart warming and compassionate experience.
My heartfelt thanks go out to you all. May God Bless You Eternally.
